The President's Report

2015/2016 was a relatively quiet one for the Association. The Child and Youth Care Association of Prince Edward Island had continued to promote our profession and increase our presence in the field of Child and Youth Care on PEI.

Our Current board

  • President: Heather Power
  • Vice President: Janelle Henderson
  • Secretary: Pat Warren
  • Treasurer: Bob Doyle
  • Member at large: Sandra Campbell

It is with great pleasure we welcome back Janelle, who has returned after an extended absence. These individuals provide a solid foundation upon which we can continue to build.

Membership over the last few years has continued to fluctuate and we currently have thirty members. In 2016 the board, once again, promoted the Association to Holland College and the class of Child and Youth Care workers are now members of the CYCAPEI. It is my hope in the coming year we can have a membership drive and increase our presence across the island.

On a National level our connection with the National Council remains strong as I participate in quarterly conference calls with Kelly Shaw, president of the National Board and with the other provincial presidents across Canada. These calls provide a wonderful time to network with like-minded individuals, to listen and to learn what is transpiring in our fields not only throughout the country but worldwide. The National Council advocates on the behalf of the Provincial Associations on different issues at a National level. Their Mission Statement is as follows:

To serve as a national unifying body in the development of child and youth care practice and to advocate for quality care for children, youth and families.

On PEI we have over the last couple of years initiated / followed up on a number of things;

  • Sponsored a needy family every Christmas.
  • Assisted board members to attend workshops and conferences.
  • Provided a Child and Youth Care student with a $200 bursary.
  • Supported Nova Scotia with the upcoming 2016 National Conference.
  • Established a Facebook page.
  • Continued to upgrade our Website, including our lending library.
  • Held an AGM for the first time in a number of years.

What does the future hold?

i hope we can continue to add enthusiastic members to our board and to increase our membership. It requires a great deal of energy and focus on the part of all board members to maintain the CYCAPEI as a viable presence in this province. It is very exciting time for Child and Youth Care workers as we move towards certification and recognition as a worthwhile and very important profession. However, we are only beginning and there is still a great deal of outstanding work to be done.

As you can see the CYCAPEI continues to move at a relatively slow pace but we are still moving with an eye on the future and with the hopes of having some younger and energetic people join our team.

Together we can make a difference!

Heather Power
